Our answers to your questions

Frequently Asked Questions: Microsoft Business Central

What is Microsoft Business Central and what is it used for?
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is a cloud ERP designed for SMBs. It brings finances, inventory, purchasing, production and projects together in a single system, where a company previously used accounting software and several spreadsheets. Groupe SL implements and supports it for companies in Quebec.
Is Business Central an ERP or a CRM?
It is an ERP. Microsoft’s CRM is Dynamics 365 Sales, and Business Central connects to it. To manage opportunities and the sales pipeline, look at Dynamics 365 Sales. For financial and operational management, it is Business Central.
What is the difference between Business Central and Dynamics 365?
Dynamics 365 is Microsoft’s family of business management solutions. Business Central is the ERP for SMBs in that family. The other members, such as Sales or Customer Service, meet other needs and integrate into the same Microsoft environment.
What size of company is Business Central designed for?
For SMBs, typically from 10 to 250 users. Below that, accounting software is often enough. Above that, Microsoft offers Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management.
How much does Microsoft Business Central cost?
There are two separate costs. Implementation is done at a fixed fee with Groupe SL, from $22,000 for financials to $79,000 for manufacturing, depending on the modules selected. There are also Microsoft licences, billed per user per month with an annual commitment. Since their rates change regularly, we give you the price in effect at the time of your project.
Is Business Central hard to learn?
The interface is close to Excel and Outlook, which shortens the learning curve for teams already working in the Microsoft environment. Training is included in the implementation and is built on your own screens and your own processes, role by role. The person in accounts receivable learns their job, not the software in general.
How long does a Business Central implementation take?
From 4 to 16 weeks depending on the modules. Four weeks for financials, eight with distribution, twelve with project management, sixteen with manufacturing. Integrations with third-party systems and customizations are added to these timelines.
Does Business Central work with Microsoft 365, Excel and Outlook?
Yes, natively. Data can be viewed and edited in Excel, documents are sent from Outlook and Power BI connects directly to the system’s data.
What is the difference between Essentials and Premium licences?
Premium adds two components to Essentials: manufacturing and service order management. If you do not manufacture and have no after-sales service to schedule, Essentials is enough.
Can Business Central replace Acomba, Sage 50 or QuickBooks?
Yes. Our implementation plans include the conversion of customers, vendors, open balances, the chart of accounts and one year of general ledger. Additional history can be converted as an option.
Can we change Business Central partners without reimplementing?
Yes. Your system and your data stay in place, since this is a change of support partner and not a new implementation. Groupe SL takes over systems implemented by other partners after an assessment of the configuration and customizations in place.
Where is Business Central data hosted?
In Microsoft’s data centres. Business Central offers a hosting region in Canada. Before implementation, we confirm with you where your data will be hosted.
Who carries out Business Central implementation and support at Groupe SL?
A single team, formed by Groupe SL and Texo, two Microsoft partners from Quebec. It brings together Dynamics 365 Business Central certified consultants and specialists in IT, IT security and user support, in English and French.
Do we have to entrust our IT to Groupe SL to get Business Central implementation or support?
No. You can entrust your Business Central to Groupe SL and keep your IT provider. The single point of service, which gives you one place to go for service on the ERP, Microsoft 365, security and infrastructure, is an option you are free to choose or not.
